Nail abnormalities in patients with vitiligo

Abstract: BackgroundVitiligo is an acquired pigmentary skin disorder affecting 0.1-4% of the general population. The nails may be affected in patients with an autoimmune disease such as psoriasis, and in those with alopecia areata. It has been suggested that nail abnormalities should be apparent in vitiligo patients.ObjectiveWe sought to document the frequency and clinical presentation of nail abnormalities in vitiligo patients compared to healthy volunteers. We also examined the correlations between nail abnormalities … Show more

“…Significantly lower mean serum level was observed in patients with Longitudinal ridging60.75+12.9 and leukonychia 54.5±11.15compared to 77.71±18.99 in patients with no nail abnormalities (p value= 0.008). A case-control study conducted by Topal et al 24 2016 involving 100 patients demonstrated nail changes in 78% of patients. Longitudinal ridging was the most common finding observed in 42% of patients followed by leukonychia, splinter hemorrhage and nail plate thinning.…”

“…We reported nail lesions to occur in 13.3% (n=16) of patients presenting as longitudinal ridging 8.3% (n=10) and as leukonychia 5% (n=6). Topal IO et al 19 . 2016 conducted a case control study enrolling 100 patient with vitiligo, has also observed longitudinal ridging as the most common nail abnormality 42% (n=42) associated with vitiligo (p value=0.001).…”

“… 8 These were also observed in patients with other ADs, including AITD, psoriasis, and vitiligo. 39 While the pathophysiology of these changes is not clearly understood, inflammatory cells targeting the nail may cause abnormal keratinization of the matrix, leading to nail plate changes. Abnormal nail findings in AA correlate with disease severity and poor prognosis.…”
