Show more

“…In our study sites at least the SRP concentrations of the shallow lakes were rather high Table 1). In comparison to natural mesotrophic or eutrophic lakes (Gerloff & Krombholz, 1966;Smart, 1980;Spencer & Wetzel, 1993), the P concentration of C. demersum was up to 4.4 times higher in our systems, and still half as high as in polytrophic wastewater treated systems (Körner, 1996;Greenway & Woolley, 2001). The nitrogen concentration of C. demersum (3.0-3.5%) we observed was in accordance with that reported for eutrophic lakes ( Table 2).…”

“…As for biomass production, the nutrient concentrations of aquatic macrophytes are well documented to be positively correlated to the nutrient status of the water (Gerloff & Krombholz, 1966;Reddy & DeBusk, 1987a;Körner, 1996;Dierberg et al, 2002;Lombardo & Cooke, 2003). “…Altogether, bottom substrate and thickness of the biofilm can be characterised as the main parameters influencing the selfpurification in upland brooks. Especially in lowland streams, vegetation also can play a large role in self-purification [23][24][25][26][27][28]. Macrophytes have there a comparable function as stones and rock debris in upland brooks.…”
