Nafcillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus A Possible Community Origin

Abstract: An increased incidence in nafcillin (semisynthetic penicillins) resistant Staphylococcus aureus (SR-SA), which peaked in January 1980, was noted in Columbus Children's Hospital (CCH), Columbus, Ohio. To investigate the source of this outbreak, we reviewed the susceptibility patterns of S. aureus strains isolated at CCH for a 12-month period (July 1979 to June 1980). A total of 773 isolates from 706 patients were investigated with a total of 40 patients colonized or infected with SR-SA, approximately 25% of whi… Show more

“…Twenty-seven of the studies were retrospective [5,10,, and 6 different definitions of CA-MRSA were seen in 21 of these [5, 10, 17, 19-22, 24-32, 34, 37, 38, 40, 41]. Six retrospective studies did not report the definition used [18,23,33,35,36,39]. Five publications were prospective studies, and 3 different definitions of CA-MRSA were used in this group [12][13][14][15][16].…”

“…Community onset MRSA infections have been recognized in children without established risk factors at least since the early 1980s, 16 and the incidence of these infections appears to be increasing. Perhaps more ominously all three Staphylococcus aureus isolates from that year were resistant to semisynthetic penicillins.…”

“…Scattered case reports describing patients with none of the known health care-associated risk factors for MRSA that had MRSA colonization or a clinical infection were published in the 1980s and the mid-1990s (29,64,205,339,359,530,711,748,801), including several outbreaks caused by different MRSA strain types in remote regions in Western Australia and then in the Northern Territory of Australia (670). Subsequently, beginning in 1993, case series of MRSA infection and colonization of patients lacking health care-associated risk factors were reported from six continents, in diverse states, nations, and regions (Table 3).…”
