Nadir ultraviolet imaging spectrometer for the NPOESS Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS)

Abstract: The Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) is being developed for the United States National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS). We describe the optical design and predict the performance of the OMPS nadirlooking imaging spectrometer. Backscattered solar ultraviolet radiation is dispersed and measured to determine the ozone total column amounts and profile concentrations. The sensor consists of a wide field (110 degree) telescope, with a solardiffuser calibration mechanism, and… Show more

“…The mapping component of the OMPS is a nadir-viewing UV spectrometer. The first model has been flying on board the NASA-NOAA Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) spacecraft since 2011 (Dittman et al, 2002;Flynn et al, 2014;Seftor et al, 2014). SNPP continues some of the long-term record of climate quality observations established by NASA's Earth Observation System (EOS) satel-lites.…”

“…It has an instantaneous cross-track field of view of approximately 110 • , corresponding to 2800 km at the Earth's surface, providing global daily coverage. For this study we use the OMPS-NM Earth science mode, where measurements are combined in 35 cross-track macropixels given a spatial size of the nadir pixel of 50 km (cross-track) by 50 km (along-track), with an integration period for each measurement of 7.6 s (Dittman et al, 2002;Seftor et al, 2014). The CCD readout is split in the center so that measurements of the central pixel are split, resulting in 36 cross-track pixel positions.…”

“…GOME2A and GOME2B are the first successive instruments of a long-term operational commitment by the EUMETSAT (European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites) agency for observing atmospheric composition from space (Callies et al, 2000). OMPS is the first instrument of a similar long-term operational commitment by NOAA in the US (Dittman et al, 2002).…”
