Abstract:Este artigo revisita a fase diplomática de Joaquim Nabuco (1899-1909) propondo, como parâmetro básico de análise, uma disjuntiva entre isolamento e geopolítica. A partir dos papéis privados e públicos do autor no período, examina suas reflexões sobre o princípio da ocupação efetiva, que pautou o laudo arbitral do rei da Itália sobre o litígio anglo-brasileiro na Guiana, em 1904, e sobre o princípio da igualdade soberana, proposto pelo Brasil na conferência da Haia, em 1907.
