PBO). It is found that the samples had good transmission in 0.25-1.5 THz region. Both SBO and NLBO have an absorption coefficient less than 10 cm −1 . Among them, SBO has not only the smallest absorption coefficient but also a very flat dispersion in the frequency region under investigation. Distinct resonance absorption peaks are observed for ZBP at ν 1 = 1.4 THz, ν 2 = 2.0 THz and SBO at ν = 2.4 THz. In the spectrum of PBO, two abnormal dispersions appear in the frequency regions 1.44-1.74 and 2.2-2.5 THz. The absorption coefficients and refraction indices of the five crystals are extracted from the THz time-domain (THz-TDS) spectra in 0.25-2.5 THz region. Studying basic physical phenomena of solid materials in THz region is the foundation for researching information materials and new THz sources, and provides experimental basis in looking for nonlinear crystal and functional material for devices development in THz region.THz spectroscopic responses of the crystalline samples are primarily related to lattice vibrations, optical phonon-photon, optical phonon-electron interaction, and other elementary excitations. The analysis on the THz spectral data can provide important knowledge of these physical processes, which may be difficult to access by other experimental methods. Therefore, new physical phenomena and properties can be found based on the THz experiments, such as electron spin resonance of semiconductor and ionic crystal, electron cyclotron resonance in metal and semiconductor, and polariton [4] .At present, the THz spectroscopic technology is playing a more and more important role in the study of the condensed matter physics, and acts as a complementary method to the well established far-infrared, Raman and neutron diffraction technology. For example, Raman scattering only arises in those lattice vibrations whose molecular polarizability can change but no varying dipole moments [5] , while the absorptions in infrared and THz frequency involves the lattice vibrations whose dipole moments change instantaneously. Thus it is crucial to use THz spectroscopy to study those vibrational modes which have no Raman activities.The merits of single crystals as optical material are their stable and reliable performance, durable and reproducible property. Time-resolved line-narrowed fluorescence spectroscopy of Eu 3+ ions in a new oxyborate Na 3 La 9 O 3 (BO 3 ) 8 crystal shows the existence of four independent symmetry crystal field sites for the rare-earth ion. A crystal field analysis and simulation of the experimental results have been performed in order to parametrize the crystal field at the Eu 3+ sites. A plausible argument about the crystallographic nature of these sites is given.
