Na+/H+ antiporters are differentially regulated in response to NaCl stress in leaves and roots of Mesembryanthemum crystallinum

Abstract: Summary• Salinity tolerance in plants involves controlled Na + transport at the site of Na + accumulation and intracellular Na + compartmentation. McNhaD in chloroplasts and demonstrates that the chloroplast is one of the compartments involved in the response of cells to salt stress.

“…Strikingly, in some cases, salinity produced little or even no alteration of SOS1 transcription (Cosentino et al 2010;Kant et al 2006;Mullan et al 2007;Taji et al 2004;Wu et al 2007). By contrast, in other plants the salt challenge induced a clear accumulation of SOS1 mRNA (Martinez-Atienza et al 2007;Olías et al 2009;Wang et al 2010;Tang et al 2010;Xu et al 2008).…”

“…Consequently, other transporters, in addition to and different from NHX, are likely to be involved in vacuolar Na + sequestration. In addition, salt-induced up-regulation of Na + /H + antiporter expression levels has been observed in leaves but not in roots (Cosentino et al, 2010), suggesting the importance of Na + exclusion and intracellular sequestration, primarily in photosynthesizing cells. Thus, tissue-and speciesspecific differences in the respective mechanisms should be considered as well.…”

“…In order to obtain the full-length cDNA sequence of ASIP from Chinese raccoon dog, 5' and 3' rapid-amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) was carried out according to the protocol reported by Cosentino et al (2010). Gene-specific primers were designed based on the canine ASIP mRNA sequence (GenBank accession No.…”
