Abstract: Background: Phytoestrogens derived from soy foods (or isoflavones) have received prevalent usage due to their 'health benefits' of decreasing: a) age-related diseases, b) hormone-dependent cancers and c) postmenopausal symptoms. However, little is known about the influence of dietary phytoestrogens on regulatory behaviors, such as food and water intake, metabolic hormones and neuroendocrine parameters. This study examined important hormonal and metabolic health issues by testing the hypotheses that dietary soy… Show more

“…Each diet protocol is outlined below by experiment number and descriptor. Furthermore, the diet formulations (ingredient list) have been published previously [17-19]. Notably, for the soy-rich (Phyto-600) diet, soy meal is the first ingredient and this diet treatment does not contain a soy protein isolate.…”

“…Serum was analyzed via gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and the circulating isoflavones: genistein, daidzein, and equol concentrations were determined (ng/ml) using internal control standards, as previously reported in other studies by our laboratory [18,19]. …”

“…Male Long-Evans rats exposed (from conception to time of testing or tissue collection) to a diet rich in isoflavones showed increased total T 3 levels [108]. Studies have shown that exposure of infants to soy-based formulas complicates management of congenital hypothyroidism [109][110][111][112].…”

“…The general formula of soy isoflavones and related glucosides. Cheng et al 2004;Lephart et al 2004). Also, it should be mentioned that genistein, in some animal models, reduces lipoprotein lipase gene expression in adipose tissue, which contributes to diminished lipid uptake by fat cells and to the prominent anti-obesity effects (Naaz et al 2003).…”
