Reaction cross sections of carbon isotopes for proton scattering are calculated in large energy region. Density distributions of carbon isotopes are obtained from relativistic mean field results. Calculations are based on the relativistic impulse approximation, and results are compared with experimental data. A strong relationship between reaction cross section and root-mean-square radius is clearly shown for 12 C using a model distribution.

The S factor and the fusion cross-section values for the 12 C + 12 C reaction are evaluated in the framework of a simple barrier-penetration model, which takes into account quadrupole and hexadecapole surface deformations of 12 C. The calculated values agree well with corresponding experimental data at off-resonances energies. It is shown that the strong oblate quadrupole deformation of 12 C induces the increasing of both the S factor and the fusion cross-section values at subbarrier energies. The S factor and the fusion cross section for the 12 C + 12 C reaction are slightly reduced at low energy due to the influence of the hexadecapole deformation.

A Screening Mechanism for Extra W and Z Gauge Bosons

We generalize a previous construction of a fermiophobic model to the case of more than one extra W and Z gauge bosons. We focus in particular on the existence of screening configurations and their implication on the gauge boson mass spectrum. One of these configurations allows for the existence of a set of relatively light new gauge bosons, without violation of the quite restrictive bounds coming from the ρ NC parameter. The links with Bess and degenerate Bess models are also discussed. Also the signal given here by this more traditional gauge extension of the SM could help to disentangle it from the towers of Kaluza-Klein states over W and Z gauge bosons in extra dimensions.
