N,O-Type Carborane-Based Materials

Abstract: This review summarizes the synthesis and coordination chemistry of a series of carboranyl ligands containing N,O donors. Such carborane-based ligands are scarcely reported in the literature when compared to other heteroatom-containing donors. The synthetic routes for metal complexes of these N,O-type carborane ligands are summarized and the properties of such complexes are described in detail. Particular attention is paid to the effect that the incorporation of carboranes has into the coordination chemistry of… Show more

“…In addition to that, the high thermal and chemical stability, acceptor character and 3D nature of the icosahedral carborane clusters make them valuable ligands in coordination chemistry. [18][19][20][21][22][23] For example, Mirkin and co-workers explored the use of di-, tri-and tetra-carboxylic acid derivatives of para-carborane (I to IV in Scheme 1) for CP synthesis, providing a series of CPs exhibiting unprecedented stabilities with respect to thermal degradation, inherited from the carborane moiety. [24][25][26][27][28][29][30] Some of the CPs including these polycarboxylato p-carborane-based linkers showed gas uptake properties and excellent selectivity for CO 2 /CH 4 mixtures.…”

“…The first is proposed by Planas et al [15]. The review summarizes the synthetic routes, coordination chemistry, and properties of a series of carboranyl ligands containing N, O donors (e.g., closo-carbonylmethylalcohols with nitrogenated aromatic rings) as well as of metal (e.g., cobalt, iron, platinum, titanium) complexes of these N,O-type carborane ligands.…”

“…[39][40][41][42] In pursuit of synthesizing water-resistant MOFs, we are working on the design and preparation of carborane based ligands. [43][44][45][46][47][48] Incorporation of such ligands into CPs or MOFs is known to increase their thermal [49][50][51][52][53][54][55][56] and hydrolytic-stability. 27,[57][58][59][60] For example, we have recently reported the most stable Cu-paddle wheel MOF in the literature against water.…”
