Myxomycete diversity in the coastal desert of Peru with emphasis on the lomas formations

Abstract: Results obtained from the first survey for myxomycetes in the hyperarid areas of Peru are reported. Sampling over three consecutive years was carried out at 96 localities between 0 and 1500 m elevation. A total of 78 species from 23 genera in all 6 myxomycete orders were determined from 723 collections of myxomycetes. One new species, Didymium peruvianum, is described, 2 species new to the Neotropics, 4 new records for South America and 41 additional new species for Peru are reported, increasing the country ca… Show more

“…In terms of biogeography, most studies have been carried out in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, including alpine and subalpine mountains (Ronikier & Ronikier, ; Novozhilov et al ., ), tundra (Novozhilov et al ., ; Stephenson et al ., ), winter‐cold deserts (Schnittler & Novozhilov, ; Schnittler, ; Novozhilov & Schnittler, ) and temperate grasslands (Rollins & Stephenson, ). Only recently have other parts of the world, such as tropical zones, warm deserts or the Patagonian steppe been studied systematically (Estrada‐Torres et al ., ; Wrigley de Basanta et al ., ; Lado et al ., , , ). At the level of morphologically recognizable taxa, many myxomycete species display cross‐continental distribution patterns (Stephenson et al ., ).…”

“…These range from country checklists (Brazil, Cavalcanti, 2010;Colombia, Rojas et al, 2012a;Costa Rica, Rojas et al, 2010;El Salvador, Rojas et al, 2013) to abundance-based diversity assessments of natural habitats (Lado et al, 2003;Rojas & Stephenson, 2012). About half of the c. 1000 known morphospecies of myxomycetes (Lado, 2005(Lado, -2016 have been recorded from the Neotropics . Our knowledge of myxomycete diversity of the Asian Palaeotropics is more limited, and c. 200 taxa are known.…”

“…Most of these organisms barely exceed a millimeter in size and are found in all terrestrial ecosystems. They have been traditionally associated with humid temperate environments, due to the need for water to complete their life cycle, but their presence in arid environments is also frequent (Lado et al 2016(Lado et al , 2019.…”
