Myrrh induces the apoptosis and inhibits the proliferation and migration of gastric cancer cells through down-regulating cyclooxygenase-2 expression

Abstract: Objective: The present study is designed to evaluate the anti-tumor effects of myrrh on human gastric cancer both in vitro and in vivo. Methods: The gastric cancer cell proliferation was determined by MTT assay. Apoptosis was measured by flow cytometry and Hoechst 33342 staining. Wound healing was performed to evaluate the effects of myrrh on the migration. COX-2, PCNA, Bcl-2, and Bax expressions were detected by Western blot analysis. A xenograft nude mice model of human gastric cancer was established to eval… Show more

“…Peng Ren reported that frankincense could suppress tumor progress via regulating the AMPK/mTOR pathway [13]. Mengxue Sun also found that myrrh inhibits the proliferation and migration of cancer cells through the regulation of cyclooxygenase-2 expression [14]. Moreover, the Xihuang pill, mainly composed of frankincense and myrrh, has been applied for cancer therapy for more than 300 years [15].…”

“…Unfortunately, myrrh oil was not extensively included in formulations intended for cancer therapy. Shi et al, 2012, reported the formulation and characterization of solid lipid nanoparticles loaded with frankincense and myrrh oil, which showed anti-tumor efficacy in H22-bearing Kunming mice [18,[26][27][28][29]. Basically, myrrh consists of several constituents, including water-soluble gum, alcohol-soluble resins, and volatile oil.…”

“…For instance, mastic acid, the active component of frankincense, inhibits the growth and metastasis of colorectal cancer by downregulating the expression of biomarkers of inflammation, proliferation, invasion and angiogenesis. Myrrh induces apoptosis and inhibits the proliferation and migration of gastric cancer cells by downregulating cyclooxygenase-2 expression[ 18 , 19 ]. Frankincense and myrrh are always simultaneously used in TCM.…”
