MyoVision: software for automated high-content analysis of skeletal muscle immunohistochemistry

Abstract: Analysis of skeletal muscle cross sections is an important experimental technique in muscle biology. Many aspects of immunohistochemistry and fluorescence microscopy can now be automated, but most image quantification techniques still require extensive human input, slowing progress and introducing the possibility of user bias. MyoVision is a new software package that was developed to overcome these limitations. The software improves upon previously reported automatic techniques and analyzes images without requ… Show more

“…Histological analysis of muscle sections has been a staple of muscle physiology and neuromuscular disease research for decades; indeed, a number of neuromuscular diseases were originally named for their distinct histopathological features [25][26][27][28]. Myovision, SMASH, and MuscleJ [16,18,19]. Of these, MuscleJ has by far the most complete collection of features, with a number of capabilities that are absent even in Myosoft.…”

“…However, despite the value of such analysis, it is often performed manually, which is both labor-intensive and time-consuming. To offset this obstacle, several groups have developed software that automates analysis of muscle histology [16][17][18][19].…”

“…Slides were cover slipped using ProLong Gold Antifade reagent (Life Technologies). Image analysis was performed using Myovision software (65). Skeletal muscle fiber size was analyzed by measuring ≥ 350 transfected muscle fibers per muscle, per animal (10x magnification).…”
