Myocarditis Outbreak among Adults, Illinois, 2003

Abstract: An outbreak of myocarditis occurred among adults in Illinois in 2003. Diagnostic testing of myocardial tissues from 3 patients and comprehensive tests for enterovirus and adenovirus of other specimens from patients were inconclusive. Appropriate specimen collection from patients with idiopathic cardiomyopathy and further enhancement of diagnostic techniques are needed.

“…The true incidence of pediatric viral myocarditis is unknown because many cases are asymptomatic initially and, therefore, unrecognized. Frequency and identification of infectious agents in cases with myocarditis have varied widely from 10% to 100% [Feldman and McNamara, 2000;Vare et al, 2000;Bowles et al, 2003;Huhn et al, 2005]. The data presented in this demonstrate that in children with acute myocarditis that progressed to death, adenoviral DNA can be detected in a significant proportion of cases (six of eight, 75%).…”

“…The incidence varies greatly among countries and is related to hygiene. [2][3][4] In Cuba during hurricane season, storms can temporarily produce conditions of poor sanitation and outbreaks of some infectious diseases have occurred. In the summer of 2005 an unusual, atypical febrile syndrome (AFS) accompanied by acute cardiac decompensation and death was reported by pediatricians of the main hospitals of Havana City to the Virology Department of the Tropical Medicine Institute Pedro Kourí.…”
