Myocardial infarction patients' learning needs: Perceptions of patients, family members and nurses

Abstract: Purpose This descriptive study aimed to identify and compare patient with myocardial infarction, their family member, and cardiac nurse perceptions on the learning needs of patients with myocardial infarction in the acute, sub-acute, and post-acute phases. Methods A total of 288 patients with myocardial infarction, 145 family members, and 40 cardiac unit nurses were enrolled in this study. “…Previous studies have also reported that post-MI patients tend to have high learning need about medication information. [14][15][16] Patients consider information about medication important because they may understand that the treatment of myocardial infarction takes a long time and therefore feel it is important to understand as much as possible about their medication.…”

“…14,17 There are also some studies which have found only moderate-level learning needs related to anatomy and physiology. 16,18 These findings are not surprising because many times in order for the patient to understand the MI disease process, they need to understand the basic structure of the heart, how it works, and what happens to heart muscles during an MI incidence. These information needs would be most relevant to patients in the predischarge period to manage their care at home.…”

“…Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of mortality accounting for 31% of all deaths worldwide, and it is estimated to reach approximately 22.2 million deaths by 2030 [1,2]. More in detail, myocardial infarction morbidity and mortality rates are 1.5-15 times higher compared to general population [1]. However, surveillance of cardiac patients has increased due to improvements in pharmacological treatment and revascularization techniques.…”

“…Likewise, a study conducted byAuxilia (Auxilia, 2018) who found that nearly all patients undergoing CABG surgery had insuf icient information. Likewise, a study conducted in Indonesia by Huriani (Huriani, 2019) who reported a high level average score for patient learning needs in the cardiac ward.…”
