Myocardial bridges: Overview of diagnosis and management

Abstract: A myocardial bridge is a segment of a coronary artery that travels into the myocardium instead of the normal epicardial course. Although it is general perception that myocardial bridges are normal variants, patients with myocardial bridges can present with symptoms, such as exertional chest pain, that cannot be explained by a secondary etiology. Such patients may benefit from individualized medical/ surgical therapy. This article describes the prevalence, clinical presentation, classification, evaluation, and … Show more

“…Myocardial bridge (MB) is an anatomical variant of coronary artery course in which a segment of the artery is enclosed by band of myocardial muscle fi bers most commonly in the left anterior descending artery (LADA) and rarely in the left circumfl ex artery (LCx) and right coronary artery (RCA). 1,2 In the literature, the prevalence of MB varies between 5% to 86% depending on the type of study and modality used (postmortem examination versus coronary CT versus intracoronary US versus conventional angiography) to assess MB presence. As such, autopsy series have estimated a high prevalence of MB as approximately 80% while coronary angiographic studies have shown a less prevalence of MB as approximately 5%.…”
