Myeloprotective activity of crude methanolic leaf extract of Cassia occidentalis in cyclophosphamide-induced bone marrow suppression in Wistar rats

Abstract: Background:Myelosuppression is the most common dose-limiting side effect of chemotherapy. Cassia occidentalis plays a vital role in preventing health disorders, but its hematological effects have not been documented much. This study is designed to investigate the myeloprotective activity of the crude methanolic leaf extract of C. occidentalis in cyclophosphamide-induced bone marrow suppression.Materials and Methods:Twenty-eight Wistar rats aged two to three months, weighing 120-170 g were used for the study. T… Show more

“…In the present study, CTX remarkably reduced the number of WBCs (Figure 1B ). This result was consistent with the fact that CTX could cause myelosuppression [ 5 ]. After CTX treatment, declines were found in the proliferation index of BMCs (4-d; Figure 1F ) and CD34 + SCA1 + BMHSCs ratio (Figure 1J ).…”

“…CTX frequently causes myelosuppression [ 5 ], and SHSB granule can cure myelosuppression without promoting the development of lung cancer [ 11 , 12 ]. However, its mechanism and therapeutic targets are still unclear.…”

“…These findings are compatible with a notion that dietary supplementation of purple sweet potato extract attenuates the suppression of T cell and B cell proliferation and T helper 1/T helper 2 cytokine imbalance in immunodeficient mice, partly contributing to ameliorate immune dysfunction (22). Collectively, it was speculated that stimulation of leukocyte proliferation or counteraction of bone marrow suppression may contribute to PFTS-mediated reversal of leukopenia by cyclophosphamide (23).…”

“…The genus Senna of the Fabaceae family includes about 260 species in South America (Marazzi et al 2006). Senna occidentalis (formerly Cassia occidentalis) tissues are used in many countries as anti-inflammatory, antiplatelet, muscle relaxant, antimalaria, and antihemolytic medicines (Neboh and Ufelle 2015). A sample for sequencing was obtained from the National Agrobiodiversity Center (voucher number: IT 175099; geographic coordinates: N 35 49 0 19 00 , E 127 8 0 56 00 ) in Jeonju, Korea.…”
