Myelolipomas of the Liver in Captive Wild Felidae

Abstract: Myelolipomas of the liver were reported in 7 captive wild Felidae, 4 of which also had microscopic myelolipomatous lesions in the spleen. Out of approximately 25,000 animals examined, these were the only myelolipomas of the liver to be found. Previously unreported in either man or animals, myelolipomas of the liver are comparable to those in the human adrenal.

“…Only a few cases have been reported in other mammals, and there has apparently been no prior report of this tumor in a simian primate. Liver and splenic involvement has been reported in the cheetah and Siberian tiger [Lombard et al, 1968;Cordy & Bostrom, 19781 and in the domestic cat [Gourley et al, 1971;Sanders & Langham, 1972;Ikede & Downey, 19721 and a subcutaneous myeloliposarcoma has been described in the potto [Bingham et al, 19761. A renal myelolipoma in a 64-year-old man has been reported [Beraha et al, 19741 and that report closely resembles the present case.…”

“…These well-vascularized extramedullary masses may be encapsulated or may blend into surrounding tissues. Myelolipomas have been reported in the spleen [6] and liver [3, 41 of the domestic cat, the spleen [2] and liver [5, 71 of the cheetah (Acinonyxjuhalus) and the liver of the Siberian tiger (Felis tigris longipilis) [5]. A myeloliposarcoma has been reported in the inguinal region of a potto (Perodictictu potlo) [I].…”

“…These two dogs had masses which represented opposite extremes in ratios of adipose to hematopoietic cells. Various cell ratios between masses of different animals have been reported [ 5 ] , and therefore would not be considered unusual in dogs. It is interesting, though probably not significant, that these two myelolipomas occurred in the same breed.…”
