Myeloid‐derived suppressor cell heterogeneity in human cancers

Abstract: The dynamic interplay between cancer and host immune system often affects the process of myelopoiesis. As a consequence, tumor-derived factors sustain the accumulation and functional differentiation of myeloid cells, including myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), which can interfere with T cell-mediated responses. Since both the phenotype and mechanisms of action of MDSCs appear to be tumor-dependent, it is important not only to determine the presence of all MDSC subsets in each cancer patient, but also w… Show more

“…34,35 However, only a few studies have attempted to identify MDSCs in patients with malignant lymphoma. 6 We assessed the percentage of HLA-DR ¡ CD11b C CD33 C MDSCs and CD14 C HLA-DR C monocytes in the peripheral blood of 15 patients with NHL ( Table 1) and 12 healthy controls and found that HLA-DR ¡ CD11b C CD33 C MDSCs, but not CD14 C HLA-DR C monocytes were significantly increased in NHL patients compared to healthy controls ( Fig.…”

“…Moreover, it has been suggested that several human MDSC phenotypes can be endowed with suppressive activity. 91 Thus, further studies are required to better define the roles and functions of different MDSC phenotypes in TC.…”

“…14,15 The MDSC phenotype varies by differentiation status and function in response to the environmental conditions of different cancers and generally has been termed as the HLA-DR ¡ CD33 C CD11b C cell population, including PMN-and MO-MDSCs, in many human cancers. [16][17][18][19] In humans, these tumor-associated MDSCs have drawn attention due to their role in tumor progression. MDSCs enhance tumor growth by negatively regulating immune responses and facilitating tumor metastasis and angiogenesis.…”
