Mycotoxin‐producing Fusarium Species Occurring in Winter Wheat in Belgium (Flanders) During 2002–2005

Abstract: Deoxynivalenol (DON) content and Fusarium spp. (Fusarium graminearum, Fusarium culmorum, Fusarium avenaceum, Microdochium nivale and Fusarium poae) of mycotoxin-producing Fusarium species in winter wheat in Belgium (Flanders) were determined. Field trials were set up in the varietal testing network of Flanders Agricultural Centre for Small Grains (RoeselareBeitem, Belgium) and followed up during growing seasons

“…Field surveys conducted elsewhere have indicated that the prevalence and severity of FHB varied strongly from year to year and also from location to location (Isebaert et al, 2009;Tomczak et al, 2002). Nevertheless, few data are available in Europe and, often, comparability to our situation is limited due to difference in methodology used to describe the impact of the disease.…”

“…Many efforts were made to relate measurements from the fields (disease prevalence or severity) to mycotoxin concentrations; however, results were very variable, from weak to strong positive correlations as well as negative ones (Isebaert et al, 2009;Paul et al, 2005). In 2008, the average DON contents were similar to the previous season despite the fact that field severities were lower.…”

“…Those include the substitution of species in the genus Fusarium and Microdochium spp. in Europe by Fusarium pseudograminearum with higher temperature optima and toxigenicity (Isebaert et al 2009). This replacement has led to the increased risk of mycotoxin contamination (Paterson and Lima 2010).…”

“…In recent years, changes in the frequency or abundance of Fusarium spp. have been observed (17,18,34). Some studies suggest that this variability may be due, in part, to environmental or agronomic practices.…”
