Mycoremediation of PCBs by Pleurotus ostreatus: Possibilities and Prospects

Abstract: With the rising awareness on environmental issues and the increasing risks through industrial development, clean up remediation measures have become the need of the hour. Bioremediation has become increasingly popular owing to its environmentally friendly approaches and cost effectiveness. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are an alarming threat to human welfare as well as the environment. They top the list of hazardous xenobiotics. The multiple effects these compounds render to the niche is not unassessed. Bio… Show more

“…Polychlorinated biphenyls are organochlorine compounds consisting of a biphenyl core substituted by one to 10 chlorine atoms with 209 possible congeners differing in the number of chlorine atoms and their position on the biphenyl core [ 1 ]. These synthetic compounds have been largely used in industrial products due to their thermal and chemical stability, dielectric properties and low flammability [ 1 , 2 ]. PCBs are among the most persistent pollutant groups widespread in all ecosystems [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ].…”

“…Compared with most bacterial degradative enzymes, the intra-and extracellular enzymatic systems of white rot fungi (WRF) enable them to degrade several classes of organic pollutants such as polychlorinated biphenyls [18], polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) [19,20], endocrine disruptors such as bisphenol A, 17 β-estradiol, or triclosan (among others) [21] and a wide variety of pharmaceutical compounds [22][23][24][25]. The ability of some ligninolytic fungi to degrade TCE in a liquid medium yielding less toxic intermediates than bacteria has been investigated in addition to their ability to mineralize it, as shown by research using T. versicolor [26], Phanerochaete chrysosporium [27], Ganoderma lucidum, and Irpex lacteus [28].…”
