“…The results also suggest that care should be taken in interpreting the results of studies examining only mRNA expression of specific genes. Both the present results and those of other studies measuring cytokine protein content in wounds do not necessarily follow mRNA expression [23,33,38]. From the study presented, one can conclude that faster intestinal wound healing may be related to early, controlled upregulation of IL-1 b and/or a reduction in TNF-a, in intestinal wounds, but is not likely due to site-specific variations in the pattern of IL-10, TNF-a, or TGF-b expression.…”

“…The fluid sampled contained both extra cellular fluid, and cellular lysates, from the wound site and several millimeters of increasingly ''normal'' adjacent tissue. The intestinal samples included both epithelial and submucosal components, which have been shown to show distinct patterns of regulation of cytokines such as TGF-b following wounding [23,38]. The alternative method of using a polyvinyl sponge in the wound to sequester wound fluid was not workable due to a high rate of infection when placed at the intestinal anastomotic sites [10,28].…”

“…Additional studies have provided evidence for a possible direct toxic effect on intestinal epithelial cells 9 . Recent reports on impaired anastomotic healing in experimental models 6,10 underline the fact that MMF and/or its metabolites affect the integrity of the intestinal mucosa.…”
