MyCompanion: A Digital Social Companion for Assisted Living

Abstract: In this work, we present the initial progressive build of a prototype system, dubbed MyCompanion. MyCompanion to improve assisted living, ultimately targeting alleviating social exclusion and loneliness. The system, based on a Raspberry Pi, connects to a user's television set and tracks data from sensors placed around the house. An inbuilt artificial intelligence chat-bot then listens to, as well as instantiates, conversation with the user based on self-imposed triggers. Data from the sensors inform MyCompanio… Show more

“…Another benefit in healthcare for older adults in assisted living centers is the built-in social connection with caretakers and friends. Loneliness and social isolation also continue to be a concern for older adults, and Loizides et al (2019), as in our study, have determined a digital companion, MyCompanion, may have benefits for adult residents of assisted living facilities. "We present the initial progressive build of a prototype system, dubbed MyCompanion...targeting and alleviating social exclusion and loneliness.... We also port MyCompanion software to an anthropomorphic version inside a humanoid robot for us to be able to give a physical dimension to the digital character" (Loizides et al, 2019).…”

“…Virtual humans have been introduced as health and fitness coaches in desktop and smartphone versions [11]. Agents for assisted living have been given both virtual and humanoid robot appearances [13]. In this paper, we surveyed virtual humans from the point of view of having them implemented in augmented reality where they, as social companions, need to be aware of changes in the real and the virtual world that is displayed to their human partner.…”

“…Virtual pets and companion animals can play a similar role, for example in helping to prevent and manage obesity [12]. In [13] a social companion is introduced to improve assisted living. It is embedded in a sensor-rich smart home environment and has been given an anthropomorphic version inside a humanoid robot.…”
