Mycogenesis of cerium oxide nanoparticles using Aspergillus niger culture filtrate and their applications for antibacterial and larvicidal activities

Abstract: Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO 2 NPs) were synthesized using Aspergillus niger culture filtrate. The mycosynthesized CeO 2 NPs were characterized by UVVisible (UV-Vis), Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Micro Raman, Thermogravimetric/Differential Thermal Analysis (TG/DTA), Photoluminescence, and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) analyses. UV-Vis spectrum exhibited a corresponding absorption peak for CeO 2 NPs at 296 nm, and the functional groups present in the fungal filtrate r… Show more

“…CeO 2 nanostructures by Aspergillu sterreus had the highest intensity peaks seen at 2θ=28.49°with (111) plane which is the lattice plane and other peaks were at 33.01°, 47.42°, 56.28°, 59.01°, 69.34°, 76.66°and 79.17°indexed at 200, 220, 311, 222, 400, 331 and 420 planes, respectively. Plane values were closely agreed with JCPDS Card # 89-8436 standard diffraction data [12,18]. The sizes of particles revealed by XRD were 28.5 nm.…”

“…Zinc oxide NPs have the ability to disrupt the gram-negative cell membrane structure of Escherichia coli [25, 26]. It was reported also that nanoparticles with a positive charge could bind the gram-negative cell membrane using electrostatic attraction [27]. ZnO NPs doped with different metal ions were evaluated against E. coli , and Staphylococcus aureus showed the antibacterial activity increasing with crystallite size [28].…”

“…7,13 There have also been numerous attempts to apply cerium oxide in cancer therapy, [14][15][16][17] often in combination with chemotherapy or radiotherapy. 16,17 Cerium oxide has been tested as an antibacterial agent, 18 for the treatment of inflammatory disorders 19,20 and in anti-obesity formulations. 21 In nanocrystalline forms, cerium oxide is able to mimic the activities of some enzymes (superoxidedismutase, catalase, oxidase) -therefore, the term "nanozyme" was introduced for this type of biologically active nanomaterial.…”
