Mycobacterium paratuberculosis Infection in a Colony of Stumptail Macaques (Macaca arctoides)

Abstract: Mycobacterium paratuberculosis infection was documented in a colony of stumptail macaque monkeys (Macaca arctoides), with 29 (76%) of 38 monkeys infected and shedding organisms in feces. Thirteen deaths have occurred during the past five years. Animals without overt clinical disease were shedding as many as 2 X 10(6) colony-forming units of M. paratuberculosis/g of feces. Intestinal tissues from animals dying of this disease contained up to 10(8) colony-forming units of M. paratuberculosis/g of tissue. The cli… Show more

“…Two total genomic libraries of M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis DNA (strain 0138 ' Linda ' of human origin and 0142 of primate origin ; McClure et al, 1987) were cloned into pcDNAII expression vectors (Invitrogen) and screened for the presence of IS900 using PMB22\S12 or specific PCR primers as previously described (El-Zaatari et al, 1994 ;Pavlik et al, 1999). Fourteen distinct clones were identified by differences in PstI and XhoI restriction digest patterns.…”

“…M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis, which is very closely related to other M. avium subspecies, is a specific pathogen able to cause chronic inflammation of the intestine in ruminants, monogastrics such as dogs and pigs, and in subhuman primates (Larsen et al, 1971 ;McClure et al, 1987 ;Chiodini, 1989 ;Cocito et al, 1994). Our understanding of the genetic basis for this pathogenicity in M. avium subsp.…”
