Mycobacterium iranicum sp. nov., a rapidly growing scotochromogenic species isolated from clinical specimens on three different continents

Abstract: The isolation and characterization of a novel, rapidly growing, scotochromogenic mycobacterial species is reported. Eight independent strains were isolated from clinical specimens from six different countries of the world, two in Iran, two in Italy and one in each of following countries: Greece, the Netherlands, Sweden and the USA. Interestingly, two of the strains were isolated from cerebrospinal fluid. The strains were characterized by rapid growth and presented orange-pigmented scotochromogenic colonies. DN… Show more

“…The strain obtained from this patient's sputum was identified as M. iranicum on the basis of genotypic characteristics. The first third of the 16S rRNA gene was identical to that of the type strain and all the other strains of M. iranicum reported to date (12), while this patient's isolate differed from the type strain by two hsp65 gene nucleotides.…”

“…iranicum isolates have historically originated from patients residing in Mediterranean countries (12). Although several reports suggest a point source exposure for patients with newly diagnosed NTM infections (5,14), the source of infection in this patient was not determined.…”

“…It is a rapidly growing scotochromogenic species with a yelloworange pigment. Based on a few housekeeping genes, a phylogenetic analysis showed that M. iranicum is closely related to another rapid grower, M. gilvum (5). Ten cases of M. iranicum infection have been reported, including pneumonia, meningitis, and soft tissue infection (5-7).…”

“…Eleven isolates had matching results in both 16S rRNA gene and rpoB gene sequencing and were identified as (14). Two isolates showed more than 98.3% similarity with established species by rpoB gene sequencing but showed one base pair mismatch with 16S rRNA gene sequencing: M. phlei (n ϭ 1) and M. novocastrense (n ϭ 1).…”
