“Pulling the Tail of the Cat”: An Exploration of Palestinian Peacebuilders' Conceptualisations of Men and Masculinities in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

<p>To date, men as gendered beings have largely remained absent from the international literature on armed conflict and peacebuilding. In general, the literature omits men‘s gendered experiences as civilians, non-combatants and peacebuilders and instead, men remain confined by stereotypes of violence, soldiering and war-making. In this thesis, I aim to break these silences by producing a qualitative analysis of discourses of men and masculinities within semi-structured interviews conducted with fourteen Palestinian peacebuilders in the West Bank. This analysis explores the impacts of the ongoing occupation and armed conflict on non-combat related Palestinian masculinities, and further, how men and masculinities are thought to interact with local peacebuilding initiatives. Through the use of feminist critical discourse analysis, this study has uncovered a number of key themes relevant to gender and peacebuilding theory and practice. Firstly, it found that the ongoing conflict has resulted in a 'thwarting' of West Bank masculinities in which men are understood as finding it increasingly difficult to live up to social expectations of their traditional roles and identities. Secondly, this study found that men and masculinities have become somewhat estranged from civil society, informal peacebuilding schemes. Based on my findings, these initiatives seem to centre around feminised narratives that emphasise women's peacebuilding capacities, while masculinities and the peacebuilding roles of men are overlooked. Nevertheless, this thesis also presents the notion that men are actively involved in the nonviolent resistance movement within the West Bank, which opens up room for a novel, alternative understanding of 'masculinised' peacebuilding in Palestine. In sum, this study articulates the need to 'take masculinities seriously' in the pursuit of more inclusive and effective peacebuilding and post-conflict development practice.</p>

Divination, pratiques de guérison et traditions islamiques parmi des femmes d’origine ouest-africaine à Montréal

À partir d’une enquête ethnographique, cet article examine des pratiques de divination et de guérison parmi des immigrantes musulmanes d’origine ouest-africaine à Montréal, montrant ainsi la dynamique dialogique entre ces pratiques et la construction du religieux en contexte migratoire. En utilisant un cadre conceptuel inspiré de la théorie de Talal Asad sur l’anthropologie de l’islam, l’article présente une description de pratiques divinatoires observées entre 2008 et 2010, ainsi que le rapport que les femmes qui y participent entretiennent avec celles-ci. En particulier, l’auteure décrit des séances de divination par les cauris, ainsi que les rituels et pratiques de protection qui en découlent parmi les femmes participantes. L’auteure présente également des pratiques de guérison telles que décrites lors d’entretiens avec 24 femmes ouest-africaines provenant du Niger, du Mali, de la Guinée et du Sénégal. Dans le contexte d’une pluralité religieuse croissante dans la région de Montréal, cette étude démontre que, même à l’intérieur d’une tradition religieuse établie (l’islam), diverses traditions sont négociées et (re)construites en contexte migratoire.On the basis of an ethnographic study, this article examines divinatory and healing practices among Muslim women immigrants of West African origin in Montreal, therefore showing a dynamic of dialogue between these practices and the construction of religion in a migration context. Through the use of a conceptual framework inspired by Talal Asad’s theory of an anthropology of Islam, this article presents a description of divinatory practices observed between 2008 and 2010, as well as the relationship between the women and these practices. Specifically, the author describes sessions of divination by cowrie shells, and the rituals of protection that they entail. The author also present healing practices as described in interviews conducted with 24 women originating from Niger, Mali, Guinea, and Senegal. In a context of increasing religious pluralism in the Montreal area, this study shows that even within an established religious tradition (namely Islam), a diversity of traditions are negotiated and (re)constructed in a migration context
