Muyocopron garethjonesii sp. nov. (Muyocopronales, Dothideomycetes) on Pandanus sp.

Abstract: During a survey of microfungi on leaves of Pandanus species in the Nabanhe Valley at Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province, China in August 2016, we collected and isolated a new saprobic taxon belonging in Muyocopron (Muyocopronaceae). Both morphological characters and phylogenetic analyses of LSU and SSU sequence data provide strong evidence to place the new taxon in Muyocopron where it is described as M. garethjonesii. A description, photoplates of the macro-and micro-characteristics, and a phylogenetic tree to res… Show more

“…The authors have been investigating saprobic and endophytic fungi associated with Pandanaceae (Tibpromma et al 2016a, b, c, 2017a, b) and, in this study, taxonomic details are presented regarding the endophytic fungi that were isolated. Pandanaceae are monocotyledonous plants.…”

“…The placement of F53 in the genus Muyocopron is supported by the fact that most endophytes belong to the classes Sordariomycetes or Dothideomycetes , with this genus belonging to the later class (Rodriguez et al , 2009; Schoch et al , 2009). Although some species within the Muyocopronales order are plant parasites (Hernández‐Restrepo et al , 2019), endophytic species have been isolated, including Mycoleptodiscus endophytica (Tibpromma et al , 2018) and Muyocopron garethjonesii (Tibpromma et al , 2016) from Pandanaceae spp.…”

“…The earliest Stomiopeltites ‐like rounded ostiolate thyriothecia with plectenchymous tissue consisting of irregularly arranged cells were recorded from the Jurassic San Agustín hot spring deposits, Patagonia, Argentina (Garsía‐Massini et al, 2012). Taylor et al (2015) believe that another extant ascomycete, Muyocopron Speg., which based on genetic analysis belongs to the Muyocopronales (Tibpromma et al, 2016), has some similarities to Stomiopeltites in terms of the fruiting body but free hyphae are absent. Thyriothecia of Stomiopeltites were identified also in the palynomorph assemblages from the uppermost Oligocene–lower Miocene Nukhul Formation, Egypt (El Atfy et al, 2013) and now here the genus Stomiopeltites is recorded for the first time from China.…”
