Mutual solubilities of hydrocarbons and water with the CPA EoS

Abstract: The knowledge of hydrocarbon/water phase equilibria is important in the design and operation of equipment for petroleum transport and refining and petrochemical plants. The presence of water in a hydrocarbon mixture can affect the product quality and damage the operation equipment due to corrosion and formation of gas hydrates. Tracing the concentration of hydrocarbons in aqueous media is also important for technical purposes like preventing oil spills and for ecological concerns such as predicting the fate of… Show more

“…24 As both the solutes and the solvent (water) can associate (selfand cross-association is present in mixtures), thermodynamic models explicitly dealing with these interactions seem appropriate for evaluation in this work. Among the different associating models, recent works on the mutual solubilities of water + organic systems with the cubic-plus-association equation of state (CPA-EoS) 30,31 suggested the choice of this equation of state.…”

“…The following procedure was established (water CPA parameters were obtained from a previous work: 31 Table 6). This approach has the advantage of clearly distinguishing among isomers, and it was used previously by Nikitin and co-workers to evaluate alkylbenzoates, 46 phenylalkanoic acids, 47 phthalates, 48 phenol, and phenylalkanols.…”

“…CPA performs better but still presents important deviations in the water phase hydrocarbons solubilities. Recently, Oliveira et al [18] presented a review of the most important works in the literature on the modeling mutual solubility of water + hydrocarbon systems. In the same work, they showed the ability of CPA to model the liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) of water + hydrocarbon system for a large number of compounds.…”

“…The phase behaviour of hydrocarbon-brine systems is essential to understand the equilibrium state of hydrocarbon formation and the water leg along with the migration and variation during hydrocarbon recovery (such as water flooding). Understanding water solubility in a hydrocarbon mixture is important to prevent aqueous phase formation and the corrosion of operation equipment (Oliveira et al, 2007). Hydrocarbon solubility in water is an important environmental issue for water disposal due to the hydrocarbon concentration limitations (Zoghi et al, 2011).…”
