Mutual positions of the Galilean satellites of Jupiter
from photometric observations during their mutual
occultations and eclipses in 1997

Abstract: Abstract. We report the final results of the 1997 campaign of photometric observations of the mutual phenomena of the Galilean satellites carried out at observatories in Kazakhstan, Russia, and Ukraine. Our results contribute substantially to the world data bank of such observations and will allow the model of the motion of Galilean satellites to be further refined. To facilitate the use of photometric data, we reduced them by computing the planetocentric rectangular coordinate differences of satellite pairs f… Show more

“…Such campaigns, as organized in the past, allowed publication of a very complete catalogue of data such as in Arlot et al (1997) for the 1991 occurrence and in Arlot et al (2005) and Emelianov et al (2000) for the 1997 occurrence. The reader is encouraged to join our campaign of observations, to contact the authors at arlot@imcce.fr, and to get information on the campaign of observations from the web address www.imcce.fr/pheura07.…”

“…One of us has been systematically developing such a method for reduction of photometry in a number of papers (Emelianov et al 1999(Emelianov et al , 2000Emel'yanov 2000Emel'yanov , 2003. According to this method, function S (t) is to be written in the form S (X(t), Y(t)), where X(t) and Y(t) are the projections of the differences of planetocentric Cartesian coordinates of the two satellites onto the plane of the event.…”

“…Positional data can be derived from the photometry of satellites during such events. For a description of specific features of the mutual occultations and eclipses of satellites and for brief reviews of observations see Aksnes & Franklin (1976), Aksnes et al (1984), Arlot (1984), Franklin et al (1991), Arlot et al (1992), Vasundhara (1994), Emel'yanov (1995), Emelianov et al (1999), Kaas et al (1999), Emel'yanov (2000), Emelianov et al (2000), Emel'yanov & Vashkov'yak (2001), and Vasundhara et al (2003).…”

“…Besides that telescope participates in the international programs of nearEarth asteroids and in the dual-channel photometry of eclipses and occultations of satellites of the giant planets. The orbits of Jovian satellites were determined with an accuracy of 10 km by using these observations (Emelianov et al 2000). Participation in international programs and asteroseismological campaigns is the main work of the Observatory because of difficulties with funding in Ukraine and in Turkmenistan.…”
