Mutual Coupling Reduction for UWB MIMO Antennas With a Wideband Neutralization Line

Abstract: A wideband neutralization line is proposed to reduce the mutual coupling of a compact ultrawideband (UWB) MIMO antenna. With the introduced decoupling method, the designed UWB MIMO antenna covers the band of 3.1-5 GHz with an isolation of higher than 22 dB. The proposed wideband neutralization line is not necessarily placed in the clearance area between two MIMO elements and can be put above the copper ground. A small clearance (antenna area) of 35 mm × 16 mm is achieved. The designed UWB MIMO antenna is fabri… Show more

“…Various designs have been proposed in the recent years to suppress the effects of mutual coupling in UWB MIMO antennas [5][6][7][8][9][10], which are composed of using tree-like structure on the ground [5], placing radiators perpendicular to each other and adding two long protruding stubs to ground [6], adopting wideband neutralization line [7], introducing a T-shaped slot and line slot on the ground [8], using a modified ground structure along with a T-shaped slot on the ground [9], or adopting a Yshaped slot on the T-shaped protruded ground [10]. However, the antenna designs in [5][6][7][8][9][10] do not offer band-notch properties.…”

“…Another way to improve the isolation between antenna units is to slot on the ground, as in Ref [4,5,6]. The other methods like introducing neutralization line [7,8] and distributing the units reasonable [9,10] are also available. However, these ways have a common shortcoming which is that they can decouple only for specific frequency band.…”

“…This inverted current is fed to the nearby antenna to reduce the amount of coupled current. NL can be a line or annular ring between the elements [27,28]. Two printed short circuited inverted-U shaped monopole-antennas of dimension 8 mm × 14.5 mm are placed on the opposite corners of the substrate with a spacing of 14 mm with a dimension of 13 mm × 14 mm for ground portion in between them [29].…”
