Mutations in Lettuce Improvement

Abstract: Lettuce is a major vegetable in western countries. Mutations generated genetic variations and played an important role in the domestication of the crop. Many traits derived from natural and induced mutations, such as dwarfing, early flowering, male sterility, and chlorophyll deficiency, are useful in physiological and genetic studies. Mutants were also used to develop new lettuce products including miniature and herbicide-tolerant cultivars. Mutant analysis was critical in lettuce genomic studies including ide… Show more

“…Lettuce is the second most consumed fresh vegetable in the USA at 28.0 pounds per capita in 2008, behind potato at 36.7 pounds [19]. Lettuce has limited roots and rapid top growth requires high levels of P supply for maintaining proper growth.…”

“…In a recent study, Ros et al (2003) found that 40% root pruning of rice seedlings at transplanting had only a small effect on shoot growth, reducing grain yield and straw dry matter at maturity by a mere 10%. These findings were established for crops like rice, that require a long field growth; it is unclear what the consequences of root pruning could be on a short-cycle crop like lettuce, which is usually harvested within 100 days of field growth (Mou, 2011). …”

“…As an important source of vitamins, minerals, and trace elements, leaf vegetables play crucial roles in human nutrition 1 . Lettuce ( Lactuca sativa L., a plant of the Asteraceae family), one of the most common staple vegetable foods, has a wide range of tastes, textures, and shapes that satisfy diverse customer needs 2,3 . Recent research indicates that lettuce consumption has positive effects on the reduction of cardiovascular disease and chronic conditions, because it provides nutrients such as vitamin A, Beta-carotene , folate, and iron content to support human growth and health 4,5 .…”
