Mutation of Serine protease 1 Induces Male Sterility in Bombyx mori

Abstract: Serine proteases are important in reproduction, embryonic development, cell differentiation, apoptosis, and immunity. The genes encoding some serine proteases are essential for male fertility in both humans and rodents and are functionally conserved among metazoan. For example, the Serine protease 1 (Ser1) gene determines male reproductive success in the model lepidopteran insect Bombyx mori. In this study, we explored the function of BmSer1 through transgenic CRISPR/Cas9 technology-mediated mutations in silkw… Show more

“…Despite our previous work found that the mutation of Ser1 causes male sterility in B . mori [ 28 ], how its particular role in the reproductive process of any lepidopteran pest remains incompletely known. The effects on the reproductive tissues and cells induced by the mutation, as well as the biochemical reactions it may involve in are not investigated.…”

“…RNAi of PCE3 gene reduces female oviposition and leads to eggs being unable to hatch (Zheng et al, 2021). In B. mori , mutation of BmSer1 leads to male sterility, but has no effect on female fertility (Xu, Wang, et al, 2022). Some SP/SPH genes display high or specific expressions in antennae and leg, but their physiological functions remain to be investigated, and likely to have other undiscovered biological functions in insect biology.…”

“…Our results suggest that the Ser2 gene regulates the male reproductive capacity and has the potential as a better target gene for pest control, especially in S. litura . In the silkworm, B. mori , the seminal fluid protein genes have been identified as the useful target genes for SIT ( Xu et al, 2020 ; Xu et al, 2022 ). Sustainability is an important factor in pest control.…”
