Abstract:Mutation bias is an important factor determining the diversity of genetic variants available for selection, and can therefore constrain the genetic paths to adaptation. An additional constraint emerges over the course of evolution. As adaptation proceeds and some beneficial mutations are fixed, new beneficial mutations become rare, limiting further adaptation. Recent theoretical work predicts that these constraints may be alleviated by a change in the direction of mutation bias (i.e., a bias reversal). As popu… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
