Mutagenicity of vinyl compounds in salmonella typhimurium

Abstract: Eighteen compounds structurally related to the mutagenic carcinogen vinyl chloride have been tested for mutagenicity in five strains of Salmonella typhimurium. Acrolein, acrolein diethylacetal, acrylonitrile, allyl alcohol, allyl bromide, crotonaldehyde, crotyl alcohol, and vinyl bromide were mutagenic with one or more strains; acrolein bisulfite, acrolein oxime, acrylamide, acrylic acid, allylamine, trans-cinnamaldehyde, trans-cinnamic acid, crotonic acid, methyl methacrylate, and vinyl acetate were not mutag… Show more

“…AN is metabolized to CEO, Table 2 Summary of exposure-response data for brain tumors in rats following oral and inhalation exposures to AN a Peak concentration of CEO in brain as predicted by a PBPK model which has been implicated in its ability to react with DNA bases in vitro to form adducts (Whysner et al, 1998a), and to produce mutations at high concentrations in vitro (Lijinsky and Andrews, 1980;Venitt et al, 1977;Zeiger and Haworth, 1985). Phosphodiester adducts were observed in an in vitro study using high concentrations of CEO (Yates et al, 1994).…”
