Musical Intensity Applied in the Sports and Exercise Domain: An Effective Strategy to Boost Performance?

Abstract: In the sports and exercise domain, it has been suggested that musical intensity might boost performance. Previous research revealed that pumping up the volume of music might increase running speed, grip strength, and choice reaction time while simultaneously decreasing time to exhaustion and level of perceived exhaustion. However, evidence is still scarce, experimental designs and tested groups vary significantly, and contradicting evidence exists as well. Yet, listening to high-intensity music could be a risk… Show more

“…Finally, some studies have highlighted the importance of the music tempo on the running cadence [ 21 , 23 , 24 , 87 ], but this effect was not considered over the preferred song. Interestingly, Dyer and McKune [ 88 ] investigated the tempo of individual favorite song on the performance, psychological and physiological responses of well-trained cyclists in time trial cycling.…”

“…Another factor related to the psycho-physiological effects of music, which may have influenced these results, is music tempo. In a recent review, up-tempo music was thought to enhance performance, whereas it was considered that slow-tempo music could lead to either calming or negative reactions [67]. However, our meta-analytical study included studies of music in both tempos: some with music in a tempo that was very fast and upbeat, and some with soft, slow, relaxing music.…”

“…Clearly, the intensity and tempo of music can have an effect on the perception of the visual environment. Loud music, due to its arousing properties, can increase activation (e.g., Van Dyck, 2019). In addition, there is some evidence that the more listeners like a certain type of music, the louder they want to listen to it (Cullari & Semanchick, 1989).…”
