Since Darwin (1871), researchers have proposed that musicality evolved in a reproductive context in which males produce music to signal their mate quality. The extent to which evidence supports this contention, however, remains unclear. Related traits in many non-human animals are sexually differentiated, and while some sex differences in human auditory perception have been documented, the pattern of results is murky. Here, we study melodic discrimination, mistuning perception, and beat alignment perception in 360,009 men and 194,291 women from 208 countries. We find that, in contrast to other non-music human traits, and in contrast to non-human traits, there was no overall advantage for either sex, and the observed sex differences were minuscule (Cohen`s d: 0.009 - 0.11) and of inconsistent direction. These results do not provide compelling support for human music perception being a sexually dimorphic trait, and therefore it is unlikely to have been shaped by sexual selection.

The ability to imitate speech is linked to individual cognitive abilities such as working memory and the auditory processing of music. However, little research has focused on the role of specific components of musical perception aptitude in relation to an individual’s native language from a crosslinguistic perspective. This study explores the predictive role of four components of musical perception skills and working memory on phonetic language abilities for speakers of two typologically different languages, Catalan (an intonation language) and Chinese (a tone language). Sixty-one Catalan and 144 Chinese participants completed four subtests (accent, melody, pitch and rhythm) of the Profile of Music Perception Skills, a forward digit span task and a speech imitation task. The results showed that for both groups of participants, musical perception skills predicted speech imitation accuracy but working memory did not. Importantly, among the components of musical perception skills, accent was the only predictive factor for Chinese speakers, whereas melody was the only predictive factor for Catalan speakers. These findings suggest that speech imitation ability is predicted by musical perception skills rather than working memory and that the predictive role of specific musical components may depend on the phonological properties of the native language.

Im September 2022 fand nach zwei Jahren, in denen der Arbeitskreis Musikpädagogische Forschung aufgrund der Coronapandemie lediglich Onlinetagungen durchführen konnte, wieder eine Präsenztagung in den Räumlichkeiten der Universität Augsburg statt. Nachdem sich bei der zweiten Onlinetagung im Jahr 2021 eine gewisse Sättigung mit digitalen Vernetzungsformaten wie Wonder.me und Zoom-Speeddatings abgezeichnet hatte, erhielten die persönlichen Gespräche in den zeitversetzten Foren, den verlängerten Pausen und den Diskussionen nach den Vorträgen eine neue, nicht selbstverständliche Bedeutung. Viele Kolleg*innen begegneten sich nach drei Jahren erstmals wieder real, und auch das Ausmaß der Beteiligung und persönlichen Erstbegegnungen war außergewöhnlich hoch. Die hohe Zahl der angemeldeten Teilnehmer*innen, darunter auch viele Promovierende, brachte eine ebenso hohe Anzahl an qualitativ hochwertigen Einzelbeiträgen, Postern, Symposien und Foren mit sich, was sich auch im vorliegenden umfangreichen Tagungsband spiegelt.Die Tagung wurde eröffnet mit einer Keynote von Prof. Dr. Reiner Keller (Universität Augsburg) zur wissenssoziologischen Diskursanalyse und einer Reflexion der Potenziale ebendieser für die musikpädagogische Forschung. Die über 30 Einzelvorträge, 12 Poster und 2 Symposien wurden ergänzt durch vier diskursive Foren und zeugten von den vielfältigen Themengebieten und Forschungsansätzen, die die musikpädagogische Forschungslandschaft mittlerweile prägen. Die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes können in mehrere Cluster untergliedert werden: Die Beiträge des ersten Clusters befassen sich, mitunter aus machtkritischer Perspektive, mit für die Musikpädagogik relevanten Normen und Dispositiven sowie Praktiken von Ein-und Ausschluss. Ausgehend von einer biographieanalytischen Studie zu handlungsleitenden Orientierungen von Musiklehrkräften in Bezug auf Interkulturalität geht Eva-Maria Tralle in ihrem Beitrag der Frage nach, inwieweit diese Orientierungen als Effekte eines Interkulturalitätsdispositivs verstanden werden können.
