Music and Mathematics in Latin America: Major Developments in the Last 25 Years

Abstract

This text is an overview for Latin America across the field of music and musicology intersecting mathematics, including the advances from perspectives of experimentation, creation, analysis and pedagogy throughout interdisciplinary developments, particularly in the field of computational science and philosophy of science. Our main goal is to spread worldwide the richness and variety of research on music and mathematics in Latin America as well as stimulate further investigation in this fascinating intersection.

Enseñanza Interdisciplinaria Música-Matemática: La Guitarra Y Su Rol Protagónico en El Desarrollo Histórico De La Música Occidental

“…También, existen estudios que indagan en el uso de la Matemática para la realización de composiciones musicales (Pareyon, 2011;Xenakis, 1992). En esta misma línea, en Latinoamérica se han logrado grandes avances de investigación sobre las conexiones entre Matemática y producción musical, considerando especialmente propuestas y métodos científicos (Pareyon et al, 2022). Respecto al uso de la relación Música-Matemática en la Educación Matemática, se ha estudiado, por ejemplo, cómo la relación Música-Matemática puede potenciar la memorización de información, de patrones numéricos o de figuras geométricas (Trinick et al, 2016), cómo el uso de aspectos rítmicos o de intervalos musicales puede contribuir en la enseñanza de las fracciones o de los números irracionales (Nisbet, 1991;Walsh, 2010;Conde et al, 2011) y también la integración entre discursos matemáticos y musicales en procesos de creación musical (Venegas-Thayer, 2019).…”
