Mushroom Polysaccharides as Potential Candidates for Alleviating Neurodegenerative Diseases

Abstract: Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) are a widespread and serious global public health burden, particularly among the older population. At present, effective therapies do not exist, despite the increasing understanding of the different mechanisms of NDs. In recent years, some drugs, such as galantamine, entacapone, riluzole, and edaravone, have been proposed for the treatment of different NDs; however, they mainly concentrate on symptom management and confer undesirable side effects and adverse reactions. Therefor… Show more

“…Differences in molecular weight, branching configuration, conformation, and chemical modification of polysaccharides provide the basis for their diverse biological activities, such as antitumor, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects ( Maity et al., 2021 ). These medicinal functions have also been detected in Sanghuangporus ( Jiang et al., 2021 ; Jiang et al., 2022 ). Here, for the first time, we identified a polysaccharide biosynthesis pathway in S. weigelae , namely the starch and sucrose metabolism pathway, which involved 48 genes ( Supplementary Figure S3 ; Supplementary Table S2 ).…”

“…However, the etiology of this disease has unfortunately yet to be fully clarified, and this is a limiting factor in its prevention and control [ 26 ]. Nevertheless, the following cellular and molecular events associated with the occurrence and progression of AD are widely accepted ( Figure 2 ) [ 13 , 27 ].…”

“…The possible mechanisms of action of edible mushrooms on preventing several agebased neuronal diseases are still undisclosed, but it is advocated that they could contribute through a reduction in oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and on the modulation of acetylcholinesterase activity, protecting neurons or stimulation, and regulating neurotrophins synthesis, on the rough endoplasmic reticulum [106,107].…”
