Living organisms have been progressively used by designers to propose alternative design outcomes aiming towards more ecological aspects. The design development and manufacturing of new materials or design components from living organisms are more achievable in textile, fashion, or product design than in architecture and construction due to the scale, multi-layer constraints, and requirements. The aim of this paper is to investigate the interdisciplinary framework, the opportunities, and limitations of introducing living organisms into the design process, including the implementation from the design ideas to prototyping until commercialization. In this paper, we focus on three types of living organisms: algae, bacteria, and fungi. Firstly, we overviewed and studied existing projects and experimentations to understand the design process and fabrication of living organisms in other domains in comparison to architecture. Secondly, we selected three case studies in architecture for each organism to analyze. We collected the data and conducted interviews with multidisciplinary experts involved in each case. Our findings show a better understanding of the potential to integrate living organisms in architectural design, the advantages, and the difficulties towards ecological awareness. The results from the interview and a comparative analysis show the advantages and constraints of each case. The future outlooks towards the use of living organisms as part of design in architecture are also discussed.

Sustainable development is a common goal of countries in the world, including Indonesia. In the process of its realization, sustainable development Goals or SDGs have an impact on various aspects of life, including overcoming food security problems. To achieve the SDGs, the participation of many parties is necessary. The form of community participation can be achieved by conducting training or counseling activities in the product development of local potential commodities, one of which is the mushrooms. Paddy straw mushroom is one type of mushroom that has a high protein content and is low in calories. Through capacity building in Wonokerso Village, Pakisaji, Malang Regency, we expect to be able to increase participants' skills and insights about the straw mushrooms product development in order to develop jobs in achieving sustainable development goals. Participants not only strengthen their mushroom product development skills but also increase their knowledge in preparing the media for cultivation. Participants were very enthusiastic because the theme conveyed in the activity was very relevant, it is hoped that with this activity participants can increase the ability and understanding of the community to cultivate straw mushrooms to be sold in various urban areas through business partners. In the activities that have been carried out, the final assessment results of training showed high knowledge about the cultivation of straw mushrooms compared to the results of initial knowledge and obtained sustainability analysis to provide advanced training in the cultivation of paddy straw mushrooms in the post-harvest process.

Mycofoam is a biocomposite composed of mycelial filaments that bind to the host substrate, which can replace polystyrene. This research aims to determine the most appropriate formulation of the growing medium and mushroom to be used in mycofoam products based on some parameters. Composition is one of the main factors for selecting the most appropriate mycofoam to replace polystyrene. On the other hand, the quality of mycofoam can be assessed through its strength and water resistance. The mushroom mycelium used in this study came from Pleurotus ostreatus and Lentinula edodes. Besides, the growing medium formulation comprises five different compositions, each containing different proportions of sawdust and bagasse. This research was composed of preparation of growing medium, spawn inoculation, molding, heating, testing, and data analysis. Based on the results, the combination of 100 percent sawdust and L. edodes was the most appropriate choice compared to other formulations based on strength and appearance. The results of the water absorption test showed that all mycofoam formulations were not resistant to water, bio-based coating can be used to overcome this problem.
