Musculoskeletal health, frailty and functional decline

Abstract: Frailty in older people is associated with a vulnerability to adverse events. While ageing is associated with a loss of physiological reserves identifying those with the syndrome of frailty has the potential to assist clinicians tailor treatments to those at risk of future decline into disability with increased risk of complications, morbidity and mortality. Sarcopenia is a key component of the frailty syndrome and on its own puts older people at risk of fragility fractures however the clinical syndrome of fra… Show more

“…The clinical implication of this geriatric syndrome includes low functional capacity, falls, and loss of independence [4][5][6] and also cardiometabolic risks, i.e., increased morbidity and mortality [7]. Since demographic changes will intensify this situation [8], effective prevention strategies are of high priority.…”

“…With these physiological changes, a long life span brings an increasing risk of loss of independence (Christensen et al 2008). The functional decline that occurs with aging is a growing problem that affects the health system and the medical treatment of a range of conditions, including musculoskeletal conditions, due to the influence of frailty on mortality, risk of complications and recovery and responsiveness to health interventions (Milte and Crotty 2014). …”

“…Frailty is defined as a biological syndrome characterized by decreased reserve and resilience to stress factors across multiple physiological systems and has been shown to be associated with adverse health outcome [55,56]. Frailty can be related to disease, lack of activity, inadequate nutrition, stress, and the physiological changes associated with aging [57].…”
