Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between quality of life (QoL) of the caregiver and disease severity with motor function in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Research data were collected in the Rehabilitation Clinic of Daegu University. The Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM-88) and the functional independence measure (FIM) were used for assessment by three occupational therapists, and the 36-item short form health survey (SF-36) were applied to the caregivers. One hundred six caregivers of under 18 years who were diagnosed with CP completed a survey and interview. The caregivers' QoL was evaluated using Medical Outcomes Study SF-36. The children's motor function was scored using GMFM-88 in five dimensions: lying and rolling; sitting; crawling and kneeling; standing and walking, running and jumping and CP's FIM scores. Results: Out of the 8 domains of the Medical Outcomes Study SF-36, the "physical functioning", "physical role functioning", "mental health", and "bodily pain" domains were significantly correlated to "total" percentage scores of the GMFM-88 (p<0.05). In addition, the "mental health" domain was correlated to each subdomain of the GMFM-88, which includes, "lying and rolling", and "crawling and kneeling". Similarly, of Medical Outcomes Study SF-36, "physical functioning", "bodily pain", and "mental health" domains were significantly correlated with "transfer" and "locomotion" of FIM scores (p<0.05). Conclusions: This study showed that the QoL of the caregivers were well correlated with the motor function of children with CP. It is also important to support not only physical health but also psychological health of caregivers of children with CP, especially those with severe motor function.

“…Mothers of children with diffi culties had signifi cantly more negative emotional conditions and more symptoms of depression 14 because they had lack of positive feelings such as joy, pleasure, loveliness, pride and fulfi llment of hope 20 . It was found that over years, parents of children with cerebral palsy, in comparison to parents of healthy children, more often complained of experiencing severe and chronic stress, emotional and cognitive problems, as well as numerous somatic diffi culties [21][22][23][24][25] . Mothers of children with cerebral palsy are exposed to psychological pressure, are under the impact of stress and depression, are worried for their child's future, most of their time spend on the child's nutrition, health, treatment, rehabilitation, are subjected to financial burdens (transport, child care, therapy, providing adaptive equipment and modifi cations in the house) 26 , which causes decline in the quality of life of mothers (both physically and psychologically), whereas mothers of healthy children have more free time, are more involved in social activities, entertainment and work 27 .…”

SUMMARY -Th e aim of the study was to investigate whether there is diff erence in the quality of life between mothers of children with cerebral palsy and mothers of healthy children, as well as whether the quality of life in mothers of children with cerebral palsy depends on their level of education, child's mobility and child's functional status. A total of 141 mothers participated in the research. Mothers were divided into two groups, 71 mothers of children with cerebral palsy and 70 mothers of healthy children from the Tuzla Canton (Bosnia and Herzegovina). A multidimensional questionnaire PedsQL™ 2.0 Family Impact Mode was used for assessment of the impact of pediatric chronic health condition on the mothers' functioning. Th e level of functional disability of the child was measured by the Gross Motor Function Classifi cation System (GMFCS levels I-V) scale. Mothers of children with cerebral palsy had poorer quality of life than mothers of healthy children in all investigated domains. In relation to mobility of the child, the quality of life was worse in mothers whose children did not move in the area of social functioning in comparison to mothers whose children had the ability to move independently. A statistically signifi cant negative correlation existed between functional status of a child measured with GMFCS and social functioning of mothers, mothers' daily activities, parental functioning, family functioning, and overall quality of life of mothers.

S U M M A R YQuality of life (QOL) in families can be affected when a child has cerebral palsy (CP). The aim of this research was to determine the effect of a child's disability on the mother's quality of life by comparing mothers of children with CP and mothers of normal children.Two sample groups were chosen from a total of 42 mothers to answer a short-form health survey (SF-36) questionnaire. The first group included 21 mothers of children with cerebral palsy who were referred to the speech therapy clinic of Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences in Ahvaz. The second group consisted of 21 mothers of normal children living in Ahvaz. T-tests by SPSS were used for statistical analysis.There were significant differences in all domains of QOL between mothers of healthy children and mothers of children with cerebral palsy (p=0.001).This research found that the quality of life of mothers of children with CP was significantly different compared to mothers of healthy children. Therefore, appropriate planning is necessary to improve their quality of life in different domains.
