Abstract:Compared with the processing of many other tissues, muscle requires a large number of histochemical stains in a process that has not been automated. Such procedures remain necessary because the muscle biopsy is an important diagnostic tool. This article will review the clinical role of muscle biopsy, the routine processing of tissue, and discuss the role various histochemical stains play in the clinician's interpretation.
