Muscle fiber composition, jumping performance, and rate of force development adaptations induced by different power training volumes in females

Abstract: Aim of the study was to investigate the effect of three different eccentric-only power training volumes on muscle fiber type composition and power performance. Twenty-nine females were assigned into three groups and performed 10 weeks of either 3 (Low Volume), 6 (Moderate Volume) or 9 (High Volume) sets/session of four fast velocity eccentric-only half-squats against 70% of concentric 1RM, followed by 3 maximum countermovement jumps (CMJ) after each set. Half-squat 1RM, CMJ height/power, maximum isometric forc… Show more

“…The results of our research indicate a similar influence of the SS in low fatigue conditions as well as in more exhausting procedures [ 20 ], with the greatest decreases in anterior deltoid and triceps brachii muscle activity. This indicates the possibility of using the SS in strength and power training based on a low number of repetitions and high velocity without significant fatigue [ 26 , 51 , 52 ].…”

“…A total body scan was performed with dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DPX-L, LUNAR Radiation, Madison, WI, USA), following the same methodology performed in previous studies from our laboratory [ 2 , 16 , 17 , 28 , 31 , 32 ]. All measurements were analyzed using the LUNAR radiation body composition program.…”

“…Leg Press Isometric Force and Rate of Force Development. Leg press isometric force and rate of force development were assessed according to the methodology previously described [ 10 , 17 , 28 , 30 , 33 , 34 ]. After reporting to the laboratory, participants were initially warmed up for 5 min on a stationary bicycle at 50 W. Participants were seated on a custom-made steel leg press chair and placed both feet on a force platform (Applied Measurements Ltd. Co., Aldermaston, UK, WPX0606-1000, sampling frequency 1000 Hz), which was positioned perpendicularly on a concrete laboratory wall.…”
