Muscicapines, a new class of guaiane-type sesquiterpene alkaloids from Croton muscicapa

Three new guaiane-type sesquiterpene alkaloids, muscicapine A (1), muscicapine B (2), and muscicapine C (3) were isol… Show more

“…Several of these plants are used in folk medicine as cicatrizing, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, against gastric problems, to treat hemorrhoids, and as agents to control uterine hemorrhages [ 8 ]. In Croton spp., the presence of secondary metabolites has been reported, as it is latex rich mainly in alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenes, terpenoids and ricin-type toxins [ 9 ]; due to the presence of these bioactive compounds, the Croton species are commonly used to treat cancer, hypertension, inflammation, rheumatism, bleeding gums, malaria, asthma, syphilitic ulcers, diabetes, pain, and ulcers [ 7 ]. The traditional uses of Croton spp.…”

“…Salatino et al (2007) described 35 alkaloid types from 14 Croton species. Among the species present in Brazilian caatinga, β-carboline alkaloids 2-ethoxycarbonyltetrahydroharman and 6-hydroxy-2-methyltetradydroharman have been isolated from C. moritibensis (Araújo-Júnior et al, 2004); anabasine and the novel guaiane-type alkaloids muscicapines A, B and C were isolated from roots of C. muscicapa (Araújo-Júnior et al, 2005). Alkaloids were also identified in C. campestris (Brito-Júnior et al, 2014) and C. rhamnifolius roots, and C. rhamnifolioides leaves, stem and roots (Randau et al, 2004); however, no compounds have been isolated.…”
