Muon tracking detector for the air shower experiment KASCADE

Abstract: A large area streamer tube detector, located within the KASCADE experiment, has been built with the aim to identify muons and their directions from extensive air showers by track measurements under more than 18 r.l. shielding. 1000 streamer tube chambers of 4 m length have been produced and tested. The detector concept is presented. The influence of the design and operational factors on the detector performance are shown. Various approaches to determine the angular resolution of the muon tracking detector are … Show more

“…The MTD consists of 16 individual muon telescopes with three horizontal layers and one vertical layer of streamer-tube chambers, providing a total detection area of 128 m 2 for vertical muons [4]. It tracks individual muons, and allows a reconstruction of the radial angle ρ, and the tangential angle τ to the shower axis [15] measured by KASCADE-Grande with an angular resolution of about 0.3 • each.…”

“…The number of muons with energy above a threshold energy E µ in a shower initiated by a photon of energy E γ is given by Halzen et al [13] in an analytical form, where energies are adequate for E γ /E µ > 10 . The number of gamma events in a detector of effective area A MT D = 128 m 2 [2] for E γ above 10 GeV amounts to S µ ≈ 50 muons per day to be detected from Crab in the MTD. However the Mkn 421 source provided during its high flux flaring episode (February-March 2010) an about 10 times higher flux thanCrab [10, 14,15,16], making analysis a lot easier.…”

“…In the analysis [4] we use bin size ∆δ = 0.25 • and ∆α = 0.8∆δ /cosδ confined to specific regions on the sky to investigate the MTD [2] sensitivity to specific gamma ray sources. Only specific arrival time periods, where the corresponding source is high above the observer are chosen to accumulate clean single muon events in the δ × α plane.…”
