Higher educational dropout is a significant area of education policy in Hungary. First, the proportion of graduated higher educational students is low when compared to the OECD average, which may be caused by dropout from higher educational courses. On the other hand, although the phenomenon of dropout has been closely investigated in several international research papers, the methodology used to determine the dropout ratio is unsatisfactory, mainly due to the lack of expert consensus. As a consequence, we do not have precise data regarding the dropout ratios, which make investigations related to this area even more necessary. The aim of this study was to measure the possible reasons for delayed graduation and dropout, and it was carried out as a qualitative study based on existing theories. In our investigation, the role of the sociocultural background; the years prior to the time spent in higher education; and the motivation of the choice of institution, employment, sports, and social activities were measured through an analysis of seven individual interviews and one focus group conversation involving 10 participants based on a semi-structured interview methodology. The causes of delayed graduation and dropout, which are more difficult to observe, are an inappropriately chosen institution and/or course, employment while studying intensively in a higher education institution, competitive sport and friends with a negative attitude toward learning. Our analysis provides a stable basis for a wider questionnaire-based investigation on a representative sample and its main units have been developed according to the research blocks of the interview analysis.

According to some literature about communication in a target language, digital competency and creativity are highly important, and achieving this is exceedingly feasible with the methods employed in experiential education.The aim of the present study was to identify the advantages and disadvantages of the online and offline digital education of students at the University of Public Service (hereinafter: UPS) in Budapest, Hungary, utilizing planned experience-based research. The relevance of the research covers two independent and separate quantitative research themes: 1. digital education during the first period of the coronavirus pandemic; and 2. online quantitative exploratory research. The results of the research support the planned experience-based research and confirm it is suitable for measuring the “flow state” of students, where flow is the optimal state where someone is fully engaged in a task at hand with little distraction. It was revealed that students can reach a high flow state when participating in a digital learning environment, which facilitates high motivation to participate in the lessons and has positive effects on the development of the students’ communication and digital competences.

A felsőoktatás rendszere az egyenlőtlenségek szempontjából is megvizsgálható. A bekerülés esélye, az eredményesség, a lemorzsolódás vagy a képzések típusa alapján különbségek mutathatók ki a hallgatók társadalmi helyzetének függvényében. Vizsgálatunk az első generációs fiatalok diplomaszerzési esélyeire fókuszál. Az elemzés külső kontextusaként a magyar társadalom relatíve rigid struktúráját és csökkenő mobilitását említhetjük meg. Vizsgálatunkban a Magyar Ifjúság 2016 és 2020 adatbázisokat használtuk fel, amelyekben a 25-29 évesek almintájával dolgoztunk (N2016= 2906, N2020=2874). Megvizsgáltuk a szülők iskolai végzettségének reprodukciós mintáit, az első generációs fiatalok társadalmi hátterének fő jellegzetességeit, illetve azt, hogy a nem diplomás szülők gyermekeinek esetében a felsőfokú végzettség esélyét milyen háttértényezők alakították. A magyarázó változók feltárásához bináris regressziós modellt futtatunk le, amelyben a függő változó a legalább BA szintű diploma megszerzése volt, a független változók pedig leírták a szociodemográfiai helyzetet (nem, szubjektív anyagi helyzet, a régió hátrányos helyzete, településtípus, anya és apa munkajellege, illetve legmagasabb befejezett iskolai végzettsége), a párkapcsolati magatartást (családi állapot, gyermekek száma), a traumatikus életeseményeket, illetve a szülők életével való azonosulást. Eredményeink alapján a diploma megszerzésének esélyét a nem, a településtípus, a szubjektív anyagi helyzet, az anya munkajellege, a szülők iskolai végzettsége és a gyermekek száma alakította. Mindez megerősítette, hogy célszerű a háttérváltozók hatásának egyidejű vizsgálata, amely bizonyos interszekcionális élethelyzeteket vázol fel, ahonnan indulva jobb vagy kedvezőtlenebb eséllyel érik el a fiatalok a felsőoktatást.
