Municipal wastewater effluent licensing: A global perspective and recommendations for best practice

Abstract: Advances in wastewater treatment have greatly improved the quality of municipal wastewater effluents in many parts of the world, but despite this, treated wastewaters can still pose a risk to the environment. Licensing plays a crucial role in the regulation of municipal wastewater effluents by setting standards or limits designed to protect the economic, environmental and societal values of waterbodies. Traditionally these standards have focused on physical and chemical water quality parameters within the disc… Show more

“…As a consequence, population willingness to pay for a better waste treatment system increases (Kotchen et al, 2009), (Logar et al, 2014). Governments should implement the regulatory frameworks for improving the whole water cycle management (Morris et al, 2017). According to the Polluter Pays Principle, environmental damage should be decreased by introducing advanced treatment technologies, which should be paid by the final users.…”

“…If these trace organic substances originate from anthropogenic sources and have an impact on human health or (aquatic) ecosystems, the term micropollutants is used. Other authors have also established the terms emerging organic contaminants, contaminants of emerging concern, emerging pollutants, anthropogenic trace compounds, or trace pollutants , . This group includes pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs, and personal care products, industrial chemicals as well as flame retardants, pesticides and their metabolites/transformation products , .…”

This group includes pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs, and personal care products, industrial chemicals as well as flame retardants, pesticides and their metabolites/transformation products , . These substances have been detected in natural streams (often because of improved analytical chemistry detection levels) and the majority has currently no regulatory standard .…”
