Municipal Practices for Integrated Planning of Nature-Based Solutions in Urban Development in the Stockholm Region

Abstract: Urban planning is assumed to play an important role in developing nature-based solutions (NBS). To explore how NBS is addressed in urban development, municipal planning practices are analyzed based on three case studies in the Stockholm region of Sweden. Through focus group discussions, interviews and document studies, the planning and implementation of NBS and their intended contribution to regional green infrastructure (GI) and social and ecological qualities are investigated. The results show that the plann… Show more

“…A wider interest is noted towards civic participation in co-management and becoming informed about NBS interventions in the Milanese context. Brokking, Mörtberg and Balfors [20] explore how NBS are addressed in urban development processes. The authors propose a study of municipal planning practices related to NBS and their contribution to regional green infrastructures and social and ecological qualities.…”

“…Implementation of integrated salt and tree management strategies, including the delineation of SVZs, would require robust spatial analysis, design and planning, supported by data supplied by salt and tree monitoring technologies (Ordóñez-Barona and Duinker, 2013; Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority., 2015; Zhao et al, 2017;Li et al, 2019;Brokking et al, 2021). Moreover, an assessment of local opportunities and constraints for implementing a coordinated salt management effort is required.…”

“…Arguably, GI designs may include tree planting areas configured primarily to support tree growth and vitality with water runoff control as a secondary function. While the widespread adoption of GI as a reliable water management tool in cities is variable, and the crafting of supportive policies that promote their construction can be challenging (William et al, 2020), GI is gaining government support in many jurisdictions (Brokking et al, 2021). GI is a best practice for combatting many potential environmental challenges in cities aggravated by climate change (Johns, 2019).…”

“…In this context, nature-based solutions (NBS) are gaining traction. NBS can help mitigate flood and heat risks, provide ecosystem services, and offer new or better green living spaces for humans and wildlife (Brokking et al, 2021). They can include smallscale interventions, such as planting trees to increase shade (Coombes & Viles, 2021), up to regional frameworks for increasing ecological connectivity (Brokking et al, 2021).…”
