We report a nominally high-confidence γ-ray quasi-periodic modulation in the blazar PKS 0301-243. For this target, we analyze its Fermi-LAT Pass 8 data from 2008 August to 2017 May. Two techniques, i.e., maximum likelihood optimization and exposure-weighted aperture photometry, are used to build the γ-ray light curves. Then, both the Lomb-Scargle periodogram and the weighted wavelet Z-transform are applied to the light curves to search for period signals. A quasi-periodicity with a period of 2.1±0.3 yr appears at the significance level of s5 , although it should be noted that this putative quasi-period variability is seen in a data set that is barely four times longer. We speculate that this γ-ray quasi-periodic modulation may be evidence of a binary supermassive black hole.

Abstract:We reviewed multi-wavelength blazars variability and detection of quasi-periodic oscillations on intra-day timescales. The variability timescale from a few minutes to up to less than a days is commonly known as intra-day variability. These fast variations are extremely useful to constrain the size of the emitting region, black hole mass estimation, etc. It is noticed that in general, blazars show intra-day variability in the complete electromagnetic spectrum. However, some classes of blazars either do not show or show very little intra-day variability in a specific band of the electromagnetic spectrum. Blazars show rarely quasi-periodic oscillations in time series data in optical and X-ray bands. Other properties and emission mechanisms of blazars are also briefly discussed.

The AMEGO Teamhttps://asd.gsfc.nasa.gov/amego/ The All-Sky Medium Energy Gamma-ray Observatory (AMEGO) will survey the entire sky every 3 hours with its wide field of view and excellent continuum sensitivity between 200 keV and 10 GeV, discovering new sources and automatically providing follow-up observation for multiwavelength and multi-messenger transient sources. Many of these sources have the energy spectral peaks in the AMEGO band, and/or spectral behavior that is not well understood at these energies. AMEGO will discover new gamma-ray bursts, magnetar flares, active galaxy flares, novae, and monitor the long-term light curves of variable sources including Galactic binaries. Thanks to its wide FoV and survey strategy, AMEGO is also well placed to search for electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational wave and neutrino sources.
